Family members perish in road accident

FRANCISTOWN: Kutlwano Police Station is investigating an accident along the A1 (Francistown-Gaborone Road) which left three family members dead on Sunday.

According to Assistant Superintendent Alec Marula, reports indicate that a Ford model car and a CA Sales and Distributors truck collided at around 820am at Tati Siding junction. He said the car had six occupants, all family members except one who was a neighbour's child. They were on their way to church in Tati-Siding.The deceased are the driver, a female aged between 30 and 40 years, a five-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl. "All the victims were rushed to Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital where they were certified dead upon arrival by a medical officer. The other three are still in hospital where they are being treated for multiple injuries," he said Monday. He said the car has been damaged beyond repair.

He said the truck overturned and spilled all its cargo, which included food items, on the side of the road."According to reports, although the truck overturned, the driver escaped unharmed and was only treated for shock. The value of stock is not known yet," he said.Marula said investigations are still ongoing to determine the cause of the fatal accident."This time we were lucky - there was no looting of the truck because the police got there in time. There are cases like these where people will loot a truck involved in an accident without helping the victims," he said. Contacted for comment, C.A Sales and Distributors transport manager Phin Mackenzie said, "The value of the stock has not been established but we hope that by Tuesday we will have everything in order".He said he would come to Francistown to personally assess the damage.
