Facing the scanner

To say Caesar has long been shortchanged is an understatement. In the past two months, since the Botswana Unified Revenue Services (BURS) installed a hi-tech scanner at the Tlokweng border gate, the tax authority has collected an average P500,000 per month in concealed goods.

"Before then we would on a good month collect P10,000 a month," says Phodiso Valashia, who has been the Commissioner of Customs and Excise at BURS since last December.

But the signs have been there. Last year alone, manual officer checks unearthed a record P15 million worth of concealed goods.
