Expiring IDs cast shadow on elections

FRANCISTOWN: The number of Omang cards expiring this year and next year is a cause for concern to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). The numbers are in their multiple thousands.

Addressing the City Council of Francistown on voter registration earlier this week, the Elections Chief Administrator of the IEC, Barulaganye Machacha, said that the number of expiring ID cards was exceedingly high.

"A valid Omang is a critical tool in the registering and voting process," she said. "But we are concerned about the number of cards expiring this year and next year." Machacha said no less than 253, 000 cards were expiring this year alone, while 166, 382 will expire in 2009, the year for the next general elections.
