Expelled GIPS students head to Cuba

Two young members of the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) leave today for Cuba to study health technology and engineering for six years.

The BCP secured scholarships from the Cuban government for Onkgopotse Mogende and Edwin Mogologolo after they were expelled from GIPS for engaging in student politics. The 25-year-old Mogende, a former Student Representative Council (SRC) president at GIPS has been sponsored to study health technology while Edwin Mogologolo, 23 will study mining engineering. Mogende said yesterday that he was dismissed from GIPS after charges that he caused students to rise against the authorities last year. The Tutume-born student was studying a Business Administration course through government sponsorship at GIPS.

"I was later fired and despite my efforts to prove my innocence, I was dismissed. I was just fighting for students' rights and luckily for me, the BCP president Gilson Saleshando secured us scholarships in Cuba. In the first year, we would be taught Spanish to prepare us for the instruction (teaching) in the next five years, which would be done in Spanish. So in a way, I think the dismissal was a blessing in disguise," he said.
