Exams council fights academic fraud

The newly established examination body plans to build a state of the art examinations center to provide a suitable marking environment and security of the exam papers, according to Botswana Examination Council (BEC) executive secretary, Dr Serara Moahi, speaking at a breakfast media meeting Monday at Cresta Lodge.

The meeting was held to introduce the council to the members of the media and the public. Moahi said they are going to plead with the government to put the center into the coming National Development Plan (NDP10). "We are going to discuss this issue with the Ministry of Education on Friday 15," she said. Moahi said though they want the center badly, funds could be their main obstacle "as we are not the only ones in need of money. But we have hope that we will be listened to". Currently, marking of the local examinations for Junior Certificate and the Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE), is done in halls and classrooms. Teachers have complained of poor working conditions when marking.

The body is concerned about forging of certificates, which seems to be on the rise. "We are working very closely with the bursaries department in verifying certificates of students applying for tertiary loans," revealed Moahi. The bursaries department has recently been hit by a scam of student's forging BGCSE certificates in order to be granted scholarships. Some students are already under investigation.
