Ex-soldier's trial postponed

KANYE: The trial of a former Botswana Defence Force employee Isaac Monyadiwa in which he is facing nine counts of obtaining by false pretense was postponed, after the accused sent the state prosecutor a letter from his doctor that indicated that Monyadiwa is ill and he has been given two days rest.

Monyadiwa's trial was supposed to commence yesterday and continue today. The state is expected to bring forward eight witnesses, who are alleged to have lost their cattle to Monyadiwa.The state prosecutor Inspector Benjamin Modimoosi of Phitshane Molopo Police also said that the accused has so far paid four of the farmers who he obtained the cattle from.The case is expected to return to the court for mention on June 25th, when the two parties will agree on the trial date.

It is alleged that 49-year-old Monyadiwa of Otse village obtained cattle worth close to P100,000 from 11 farmers in Borolong district since June last year.Monyadiwa is said to have obtained the cattle at the time when he was running a milling business, which buys cattle from individual farmers to sell to butcheries. The accused allegedly made agreements with some farmers to take their cattle and pay them after seven days, but he never paid. He reportedly switched off his phone every time the farmers called to enquire about their payments.
