EU buttresses Botswana's MDG work

European Union ambassador to Botswana, Gerard McGovern has said it is important to accelerate work towards achieving Millennium Development Goals (MDG) with less than two years to the deadline.

He said the MDGs constitute an unusually powerful international compact to address some of the most pressing development challenges. "Two of these previously silent disasters are women dying when giving life and small children dying because of preventable diseases," he asserted.

He said over the last couple of months, the EU has worked hard, together with the Ministry of Health and other partners to identify the targets that can trigger the acceleration towards achievement of MDG goals. He said this is not something they have just come up with, as there is work that has already been done. "This is not a quick fix, especially not in a country like Botswana where the fundamentals, like infrastructure and personnel, providing for excellent access are already in place," he explained.
