The Assistant Minister of Health, Gaotlhaetse Matlhabaphiri, has told Gabane residents that the ministry will always ensure that essential drugs for diseases like hypertension and diabetes do not run out in hospitals.

He was responding to concerns raised by residents during a Kgotla meeting he addressed in the village last week. The assistant minister said the nature of the diseases dictates that the supply of such vital drugs is constant.

Residents had informed him that there was an acute shortage of hypertension drugs. As a result nurses at various clinics often ask patients to buy their own drugs from chemists but most of them cannot afford them because the drugs are expensive. Regional matron Dineo Sila explained that the shortage of drugs in clinics is due to delivery problems from the Central Medical Stores (CMS). She, however, pointed out that at times the suppliers also run out of stock, which is imported.
