Electricity tariffs to go up?

Power tariffs are likely to go up before end of this year following an announcement by Eskom this week.

The South African company in June hiked power tariffs by 30 percent in the country but Botswana tariffs were not affected. Botswana imports more than 40 percent of its electricity from South Africa, particularly Eskom. Reports have been showing that Eskom wants to increase tariffs by 100 percent in the next two years.

The public relations officer for Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) Tlhomamiso Selato could not be reached for comment yesterday as their phones rang unanswered. The shortage of electricity started two years ago and has resulted in tariffs going up every four months at the same time making business difficult for investors. The commencement of operations at local mines is also expected to worsen power outages.
