Government has raised over P110.5 million from the five thebe per kilo watt/hr levy charged on electricity consumers on a monthly basis, since the levy was introduced last April.

The money is used to help the rural dwellers to connect electricity at a subsidised cost of P5,000, that is P15,000 cheaper than they traditionally have been paying over the years. Thanks to the initiative 3,723 households have been connected at the new P5,000 standard connection fee.

This is contained in the Ministry of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources' committee of supply speech presented to Parliament recently. The levy came into effect on April 1, 2010. Meanwhile, the minsitry announced that the P5,000 standard connection cost is currently being implemented in two phases. The first phase started in October last year, and allows those in areas that had standard cost previously, to connect at P5, 000. The second phase, according to the ministry, will start in October this year and will cover areas that were omitted from the first phase.
