Eight people die during Independence holidays - Police

Eight people died in 285 road accidents recorded during the recent independence holidays. The number of deaths increased compared to seven lives lost in 371 road accidents recorded in the same period last year. The accidents were apparently caused by drunken driving, excessive speed and failure to obey road traffic signs.

In other offences, the police recorded an increase in armed robbery, burglary, house break-ins and theft during the independence holidays. Eighteen cases of armed robbery were recorded compared to eight last year. A total of 31 cases of house break-ins and theft were recorded while in the same period last year the figure stood at 22. Forty burglary cases were also reported compared to 26 recorded during the same period last year.
