Educational TV broadcasts finally start

After months of waiting, local educational television programmes will finally start broadcasting today.

The programmes will be aired on Botswana Television (Btv) between 11am and 1pm, from Monday to Saturday, the educational television team pioneering the project said in a press statement released over the weekend. The original broadcast date had to be moved due to "technical challenges which took time to be resolved," the press release reads. In an interview with The Monitor's sister publication Mmegi last month, director of ICT and Media Services in the Ministry of Education and Skills Development (MoESD) Kgopotso Ramoroka said the main editing suite required for editing the programmes needed to be reset, a factor they only discovered after a long time.  At the time, Ramoroka said they had set themselves the target of starting broadcast by end of last month (September).

Officially launched in June, the TV educational programme was expected to start broadcasting mid-July. It had been identified as one of the avenues to be used to mitigate the effects of the April-June public sector strike on the education system, which was one of the worst affected during and after the civil servants' walkout.  The launch of the educational programming will however coincide with the start of this year's Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLE) and Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE).
