Education system needs scrutiny - Saleshando

The president of the Botswana Congress Party (BCP), Dumelang Saleshando said the government does not take the education system seriously.

Addressing a  press conference yesterday he said the reason why the recent Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLE) results have shown an embarrassing decline in performance, is the indication that government is not committed to providing a good education system.

Saleshando said one of the solutions to this, which the government has always swept under the rug, is the issue of a multicultural education system. "The introduction of mother tongue in schools will enable children to understand what they are being taught and develop confidence and relate to it better" he said. In different districts where Kalanga, Sekgalagadi and Sesubiya, to mention but a few, are spoken, children have to be introduced to education fundamentals by the languages they grew up speaking. He pointed out. "A number of schools in other regions have a Kalanga speaking authority, children relate easily but BDP [Botswana Democratic Party] presented it as a headache because it is against it," he said.
