Education gets largest share of budget

The Ministry of Education has been allocated the largest share of the 2011/12 recurrent budget at P8.7 billion after it requested an increase in bursaries for post secondary students last year.

The budget will also cater for the opening of three new secondary schools in Mogoditshane, Mmadinare and Nata. This is the 10th year in a row in which the ministry has been getting the largest share after the increase in secondary school graduates who were in the past sent to South African tertiary institutions and the recent growth of local private institutions.

The Ministry of Local Government came second with P3.8 billion, which is a decline from 2010/11 financial year, due to the transfer of primary health services to the Ministry of Health. The establishment of Directorate of Intelligence Services two years ago, whose mandate is still causing confusion among security forces, continues to suck funds from government placing Ministry of Defence, Justice, and Security as the third largest spender. "The Ministry of Defence, Justice and Security accounts for the third largest of 13.1 percent at P3.6 billion due to increases in personal emoluments and running costs for Botswana Defence Force (BDF) and Directorate on Intelligence and Security," Matambo said.
