The European Commission (EC) and the Ministry of Education (MoE) last Friday signed an infrastructure development contract for the augmentation of Gaborone Technical College (GTC)and the Auto Trades Technical College.

The objectives of the augmentation project is to enhance the facilities at the two colleges to facilitate the transition from a workplace based training centre focusing mainly on work place based training to community based colleges with open access and modular training courses as required by Botswana Technical Education Programme (BTEP). The other objective is to contribute to a more diversified and high quality range of vocational activities that will also cater for the needs of disadvantaged students and to contribute to a more efficient use of the facilities and staff.

Speaking at the ground breaking ceremony held at the GTC campus, Assistant Minister Moggie Mbaakanyi said the event highlighted the continued support that the EC renders to her ministry in the area of technical and vocational education and training (TVET). She indicated that over the years the government has benefited from the development cooperation with the EC as witnessed by the commission's support through the European Development Fund seven and eight where infrastructure like the GTC and Francistown College of Technical and Vocational Education were established. She explained that the government identified education and training sector as a key sector for achieving the national objectives and alleviation of poverty as enshrined in the Vision 2016 long-term development policy and the national development plans.
