Dusty road leaves teachers fuming

Teachers at Ledumang Senior Secondary School in Gaborone have threatened "to take to the streets" over the dusty road that runs in front of their school, thus posing a health hazard.

The road runs in front of both Ledumang primary and senior secondary schools. The situation becomes unbearable during morning and afternoon rush hours when speeding combis cause blinding and suffocating dust.

The Gaborone City Council's environmental department used to sprinkle water on the road in the morning and afternoons to control the dust, but the exercise has since been discontinued. Teachers are now complaining that their health is in danger. "When the cars pass in the mornings their drivers have to switch on their lights because they cannot see anything. The situation is even more dangerous for students crossing the road," said one teacher, Agnes Kgwadi.
