The Department of Road Transport and Safety (DRTS) has said that measures have been put in place to deal with illegal transporters.

Principal public relations officer at DRTS, Amos Motshegwe, told Mmegi yesterday that they have now computerised the system of issuing permits to run minibuses and taxis to help fight the problem of unlicensed operators. Motshegwe said they have now started receiving applications for licences since the lifting of the suspension. Applications had been suspended to allow for investigations and mitigation measures to be put in place.

"We had closed because we realised that there was a lot of piracy on our roads, so we wanted to assess the situation and come up with mitigation measures before we open for applications again," he noted. "We have successfully managed to computerise our licensing procedures and we hope we will now be in a position to arrest the situation," he said.
