Drought Relief Programme Cuts 68 Workers

FRANCISTOWN: The Ward Development Committee (WDC) for Ipopeng Ward here employed only 43 people for the second phase of the drought relief programme last week, 68 less than for the first phase of the programme.

Ipopeng Ward consists of Blocks 7 to 10.
The Deputy Chairman of the development committee, Gaonyadiwe Raditlhobane, says even those fortunate enough to be employed will face hardships because they are paid only P360 per month. "The money is so little," Raditlhobane says. "The other problem is that the payments arrive late - around the 10th of the month.

"The second phase of the programme entails developing primary school premises by removing unwanted soils and public toilets. The areas to be covered include Moremogolo Primary School and Block 7. How long the programme will last will be determined by the availability of materials."
