Dramatists sorry for 'mischief' - Kgafela

The 15 members, along with their coach John Marumo, were dragged before the Bakgatla Kgotla along with their families and ward leaders and caned after the group performed and won with a play depicting Bakgatla women initiation school, Bojale, in a drama competition organised by the Botswana Training Authority (BOTA) three weeks ago.
Critics have since condemned the Bakgatla leader's actions as a violation of human rights. However, in an interview with Mmegi at his law firm's offices, Kgafela II defended his actions yesterday. " People have got to understand that human rights on its own is a fluid concept which is relative to the values of a particular community."As an example Kgafela II cited the death penalty, which he said in some societies can be viewed as a violation of human rights. " I'm against the death penalty myself, but the community of Botswana supports it and they do not see it as a violation of human rights," Kgafela said.
