Dow mobilises lawyers against anti-gay laws

Former High Court Judge, attorney Unity Dow of Dow and Associates, has called on lawyers to re-ignite debate on the constitutionality of anti-sodomy laws in the country.

The section that Dow seeks lawyers to challenge is Section 164 of the Penal Code that criminalises same sex relationships.

In 2005 gays attempted to register their association, the Lesbians, Gays and Bisexuals of Botswana (LEGABIBO), with the Registrar of Societies. The application was turned down two years later on grounds that the republican constitution does not recognise homosexuals.
