'Domkrag' committee in Palapye to review progress

FRANCISTOWN: The Botswana Democratic Party's (BDP) Political Education and Elections Committee (PEEC) is meeting in Palapye to review progress made in the last two years today.

BDP executive secretary Dr Comma Serema says the PEEC is meeting to review progress and to strengthen the BDP's organs and committees.
The incumbent PEEC's mandate is coming to an end in July. "Since the current committee is due to conduct a handover in July, they have to look at a number of things such as handover notes," Serema says.
The PEEC is also commending certain projects to be implemented by the incoming committee. One of the challenges before the 10-member committee, chaired by Local Government Minister Margaret Nasha, is examination of a recent petition by a select group of members of the BDP Women's Wing querying the results of the recent congress held at Tati Siding.
The petition was spearheaded by Binkie Kerileng, Ivory Keke, Banyenyi Davids, Veronicah Lesole, Esther Mokgosi and Botshele Kgatitswe.
Today's seminar is a sequel to last week's meeting held at the Maharaj conference centre in Gaborone.
Nasha says after serving the mandatory two years, "we thought it important to have an in-depth review of our assignment and duly report our findings to the party."
"It is appropriate that we look into the petition submitted by some members of the Women's Wing and see if there was any problem at the congress and the conduct of the elections," Nasha says.
"As we go out, one of the milestones that we have achieved is a formula for the conduct of Bulela Ditswe primaries and a code of conduct for election contestants."
Nasha believes the PEEC is responsible for the BDP's winning of by-elections. "As we prepare the handover of our duties, we have every reason to celebrate, and we believe we have performed to the expectations of our principals," she says.
Nasha's PEEC has also established an Elections Board (EB) for the BDP to deal with the administrative aspects of elections.
" The EB, which will be chaired by prominent Gaborone-based attorney Parks Tafa, has seven members. The BDP executive secretary and the PEEC chairperson are ex-officio members. BDP deputy executive secretary, Fidelis Molao is secretary of the EB". Nasha says the PEEC will work closely with the EB on pertinent electoral matters. "The two will be interrelated and interdependent. But, the buck stops with the EB to see to it that things are done right."
