FRANCISTOWN: Retired Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) secretary general, Daniel 'DK' Kwelagobe made a strong comeback to the party leadership yesterday when he was elected party chairman. DK might have predicted his appointment when he relinquished the party secretary general's position, which he held for about 31 years. He declined to defend his seat last year.

The 18-member BDP Central Committee (CC) elected Kwelagobe yesterday to fill the void left by Ian Khama who on April 1 ascended to the party leadership and state presidency. Kwelagobe was nominated by former president Festus Mogae as an ordinary member of the BDP CC after last year's congress in Molepolole.

Another man who benefited in yesterday's BDP meeting is Selebi-Phikwe West MP, Kavis Kario who was co-opted as an ordinary member filling the position that was previously held by Kwelagobe. "Yes, Kwelagobe has been elected the new BDP chairman following the CC meeting," said BDP executive secretary, Dr. Comma Serema.
