Ditshwanelo condemns caning of 'culture offenders'

The Botswana Centre for Human Rights (Ditshwanelo) has condemned the caning of members of a drama group at the Mochudi Kgotla last week.

Fifteen members of Maranyane, an award winning drama group, were lashed on their bare backs for allegedly abusing the Sekgatla culture in one of their plays.

Applying of corporal punishment on the back has been outlawed. According to the law, corporal punishment may be applied only on men aged 40 years or younger.
