DIS pressure behind Kalafatis pardon

The incarceration of Kalafatis killers, Gotshosamang Sechele, Ronny Matako and Boitshoko Maifala showed that there were no 'holy men', and had a chilling effect on the whole security apparatus, sources say.

Sources within both the Military Intelligence (MI) and the Directorate of Intelligence and Security (DIS) say the fact that the three men, who were foot-soldiers for a few men connected to the high office could stay in jail, proved that no-one was safe.

This message dissipated even to ordinary members of the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) and the Botswana Police Service who reportedly showed reluctance to take orders, especially in scenarios where they could potentially use force.  "Look, those guys were taking orders from some of the most high-ranking members of our national leadership. If those men could be put in jail for something they did while on duty, what did it mean for ordinary boys?" asked a member of the MI.
