The Assistant Minister of Agriculture Oreditse Molebatsi told a Kgotla meting in Rasesa yesterday that the Directorate of Intelligence and Security (DIS) as well as the Botswana Police Service are investigating a local seed company for allegedly selling fake Segaolane seeds to farmers last year.

Molebatsi said he could not discuss details because investigations into the matter are ongoing. He urged members of the public to exercise patience but assured that action would be against the perpetrators. In an interview with Mmegi after the meeting, Molebatsi said he would not state when the investigations would be completed, but as the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) they would ensure farmers get the right seeds in the next ploughing season.

Among other things related to crop production, the assistant minister advised farmers to form clusters so they could be helped with the fence and water supplies. He also said farmers should focus on planting drought-resistant crops like sorghum and that they should graduate from traditional ways of farming to modern farming methods, including row planting. Molebatsi further discharged those who still plant the different types of crops in the same line as the crops end up competing for water and minerals.
