Obakeng Moumakwa wept as he read his last speech as MP for Kgalagadi North on Friday. The Botswana National Front (BNF) politician did not finish reading his speech because he was overcome by emotion. He sat down shedding tears. Moumakwa became the first MP for the constituency in 2004 after the old Kgalagadi was divided into two.

In his farewell speech, he said he would remain mindful of the great distinction and responsibility the public office requires, especially representing of people. "I sincerely regret that, on account of circumstances that have subsequently arisen, I am unable to continue in the active service of the aspirations and interests of the people of Kgalagadi North constituency. Let me assure you, though, that their welfare remains near and dear to my heart," he said. He thanked Batswana for their continued faith and support of existing political systems. It is not yet clear where Moumakwa is heading.

Another MP who quit on Friday, Boyce Sebetela of Palapye thanked President Festus Mogae for giving him support during his term as legislator. The former cabinet minister said he would not be who he is had it not been for Mogae's support. Sebetela joined Parliament in 1998 after Mogae resigned as MP for Palapye to become the president. He was appointed Assistant Minister of Finance and then the first Minister of Communications, Science and Technology. He said that he was happy at the friendly political atmosphere in Botswana where MPs from the ruling party and opposition debate peacefully sharing ideas on how best to improve the lives of Batswana. He said this makes the country different from others in Africa.
