Departed soldier receives honours

MANYANA: Major Gaolatlhe Tiro, the Botswana Defence Force soldier who died in a peacekeeping mission in Darfur, Sudan on the eve of independence celebrations has been awarded two medals and a certificate.

The soldier who was buried yesterday in Manyana was presented with the honours by Mike Musaka, a representative from United Nations African Mission in Darfur (UNAMID).

Musaka said at the burial that Tiro was killed by enemies of peace. He described Tiro as an enthusiastic soldier who was dedicated to his job and respected his colleagues. He read condolences from the head of mission of the African Mission in Sudan. Other condolences were from the British and French governments who strongly criticised the attack on peacekeepers and promised to support the African peacekeeping mission in Darfur. There was concern that the attack came when the warring parties are supposed to hold talks at the end of this month in Tripoli, Libya.  Minister of Justice, Defence and Security Phandu Skelemani, commander of BDF Major General Tebogo Masire and Major General Jefferson Tlhokwane were among the people who came to bury Tiro. Two uncles of the late soldier, Otshedile Tiro and Ewetse Ngakaagae described him as a loyal and respectful man who never caused any trouble at home and in the village.
