Defence budget too high economist

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Even though the Ministry of Defence, Justice and Security is considered a priority because it provides a conducive environment to attract investors, its budget allocation is too excessive a University of Botswana academic has said.

Speaking at the Botswana Confederation of Commerce Industry and Manpower. national budget review in Selebi-Phikwe on Wednesday, Obonye Galebotswe said the ministry's budget of P0.8 billion seems very excessive given the fact that there are no proven productive linkages with other sectors.  He said the budget allocation to this ministry could be justified in countries like United States of America because they produce their own firearms and there is a linkage with other sectors. "We are a not saying the ministry is unnecessary as it would attract investors but we are a bit worried," he said.

Participants during the session also complained that 90 percent increase in the Ipelegeng budget is unjustified as the programme is not a priority area. They also complained that government is simply creating a monster it will not be able to fight by continuing to pump more money into youth programmes.
