De Graaf denies conflict over bolus

Contrary to reports, the Minister of Agriculture, Christiaan de Graaf, has denied that his ministry and the views of President Ian Khama regarding the use of bolus in beef cattle were different.

In previous interviews in February the minister had said that they would not consider the ear-chip because it has complications and can get easily lost. At a recent meeting with the Farmers Association the minister said that the Electronic Ear Tag (EET) coupled with an Analogue Ear Tag (AET) would replace the reticular bolus as an animal identification device in this country with effect from next January.

When asked about what would now happen to the three transmitters used for bolus tracing, installed on the twin towers, Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs and the Ministry of Education and Skills Development that link with the third transmitter at the Ministry of Agriculture, the minister said they would continue to be in use.
