DCEC officer explains arrest of lawyer

FRANCISTOWN: A Directorate of Corruption and Economic Crimes (DCEC) officer explained to the High Court last week why he arrested and detained a private attorney.

Andrea German told Justice Moses Chihnengo that he arrested and detained Mboni Manyothwane because he was interfering with investigations. The DCEC officer was testifying in a case in which Manyothwane is suing him, together with two other investigators for P265,000 for unlawful arrest, false imprisonment and loss of income.

German said that he arrested and detained Manyothwane in November 2009, under the powers conferred by Section 10 and Section 28 of Criminal Procedure Act. He said they had information that Manyothwane was contacting and communicating with some of their potential witness in a land fraud case. He said the case was still under investigations and they were yet to meet some of the potential witnesses Manyothwane was contacting.
