DCEC man says police officer swallowed bribe money

FRANCISTOWN: A police officer is alleged to have swallowed a P100 note when anti-graft officers pounced on him on suspicion that he took a bribe from a taxi man in 2008.

The Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crimes (DCEC) officer, Onkabetse Sekokonyane caused laughter at the Francistown Chief Magistrate's Court when he testified that Constable Keneilwe Boikhutso of Kutlwano Police Station in Francistown swallowed the note when he arrested him. Sekokonyane told Francistown chief magistrate, Christopher Gabanagae that he was in the company of two colleagues when they confronted Boikhutso immediately after the alleged bribery took place at Manila Bar in Selepa. He said the police ran away when he was confronted by the anti-graft sleuths but when he was apprehended, he said he had swallowed the note.

"The accused took us by surprise and ran away where we followed him.  We eventually apprehended him and when we asked him to produce the money that he received inside the bar, he told us that he had swallowed it," Sekokonyane testified. He said that they were informed by a Zimbabwean that a certain police officer from  Kutlwano station was soliciting bribes. The said officer had arrested the Zimbabwean before and charged him for driving a public transport vehicle without a public service vehicle-driving licence. The court also heard that at the time, the Zimbabwean paid the officer P400 and was to pay another P100 later when his passport would be returned to him.
