Dagga trader finally goes to jail

FRANCISTOWN: A Zimbabwean who has escaped jail after several convictions for dagga offences ran out of luck last week when Chief Magistrate, Lorraine Makati-Lesang locked him up for two years.

Eston Dube was jailed for selling dagga after he received another two years for possessing the illegal drug. The sentences will run concurrently. The magistrate said that the courts have bent over backwards to accommodate Dube so that he can change and find a legal way of making money but in vain. "You have been given a chance so many times. You have shown that you have total disregard for the law by doing this over and over again. The courts have avoided giving you a custodial sentence before, hoping you will reform. You are now going to be imprisoned so as to deter you," said Makati-Lesang before announcing the two-year-jail term. Dube was arrested last November after the police raided a house in Gerald Estates after a tip-off. The police found a Toyota Corolla leaving the house and blocked its way. This made Dube and the other person in the car jump out and ran away. A search yielded four bags of dagga from the car and another seven from the house. The police arrested Dube the next day.

Makati-Lesang said if Dube had an alibi, he could have mentioned it to the police much earlier in order for them to investigate and reach a conclusion that could absolve him.
