CSO to become autonomous before next budget

The Central Statistic Office will be transformed into an autonomous organisation before the beginning of the 2010/11 budget, Parliament has heard. But the CSO will continue with some of its duties such as the conduct of national population census.

Presenting the Statistics Bill to Parliament for a second reading, the Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Kenneth Matambo, said Statistics Botswana will be the source, custodian and principal data collecting and disseminating authority for official statistics in Botswana.

"The re-organisation process recognised the transformation and complexity of the economy, resulting in increased demands for various forms of statistics and statistical services, monitoring and evaluation of socio-economic and environmental status of the nation, and recommended for the autonomy of (the) CSO for national statistics coordination and efficient way to address these demands," Mathambo said.
