Crime syndicates exist in Botswana - minister

Parliament has been told that crime syndicates exist in Botswana. Justice, Defence and Security Minister Phandu Skelemani said yesterday that the syndicates commit crimes such as motor vehicle theft, armed robberies, drug trafficking, illicit dealings in diamonds, stock theft and fraud (cyber crime). They also steal or forge travel documents.

Skelemani was answering a question from the Member of Parliament for Palapye, Boyce Sebetela in Parliament yesterday. Sebetela had asked the minister to brief the House on the problem of organised crime in Botswana and what special measures are being put in place to counter the menace. Skelemani explained that to counter such operations, the Botswana police has set up specialised investigation teams. The police has intensified intelligence gathering on the activities of the syndicates.

Other measures include human resource development in specialised areas such as cyber crime and drug trafficking investigations. At another level, there has been collaboration with the regional body of police chiefs - SARPCCO. Member states have been actively involved in joint cross border operations intended to frustrate activities of the crime syndicates.
