Crashed Zeppelin Won't Be Replaced - De Beers

The Zeppelin, that giant balloon-like airship, which used to float over Gaborone, Jwaneng, and Orapa in the last two years, may never be seen again in Botswana. Three weeks after the diamond-finder crashed outside Jwaneng, De Beers' spokesman in South Africa, Tom Tweedy says the company may never use the craft again in Botswana.

"Although we have not received detailed information, we are certain the same Zeppelin will no longer be used again. There were only three Zeppelins worldwide. One is in Japan, another one is used for tourism purposes in Germany, while the third was being loaned to us for use in diamond explorations.  Effectively there are only two Zeppelins left.

"To get another one will not be easy. We do not believe we will be flying it again. It was not our property. It takes 18 months to build a new one, " he said. Tweedy added that his company is yet to know the circumstances that caused the Botswana-based Zeppelin to crash so they know the necessary precautions to put in place should the need to secure another one arise.
