Cousin testifies against Patlakwe

The father of a girl who accuses Norman Patlakwe of raping her in June last year has told the Village Magistrate court that the accused is his cousin and that they had had a good relationship before the alleged incident.

In his testimony, yesterday John (not real name) said that he met Patlakwe at a bus stop in Mmankgodi on June 16 last year and he asked Patlakwe for P10 to give to his daughter who had to travel to Gaborone to deliver a bag to her mother. Patlakwe said he did not have P10 but offered to give the girl a lift to Mogoditshane where he would give her P2.50 for combi-taxi fare.

He told the court that on June 17, he received a phone call from his wife who enquired why he had allowed the girl to get a ride from Patlakwe. John said his wife told him that Patlakwe had done "bad things to her daughter", and then hung up. He said he fell asleep and upon waking he went out of the house and found his daughter crying as she washed her school uniform.
