Court grills Kalafatis' alleged killers

When four members of Botswana Defence Force (BDF) accused of John Kalafatis' murder took the witness-box to defend themselves, little did they realise they were inviting grueling interrogation from presiding Judge David Newman and the prosecution team led by Assistant Attorney General Kabo Leinaeng, Ambrose Mubika and Mpho Letsoalo.

The contention of the prosecution is that a member of Military Intelligence (MI) Sergeant Dzikamani Mothobi and three members of Military Police (MP) Lance Corporal Gotshosamang Sechele, 36; Lance Corporal Matako, 35; and Corporal Boitshoko Maifala, 37, unlawfully acted jointly together and in concert to cause the death of Kalafatis.

First to enter the lion's den was Mothobi. After being led by defence attorney, Thabiso Tafila, Mothobi told court that on the fateful day, he was not armed, hence could not have caused Kalafatis' death.
