Court confirms Chilume's conviction, sentence

FRANCISTOWN: The High Court has thrown out an application in which a 40-year-old man of Selebi- Phikwe, who defiled his mentally retarded niece, was challenging his conviction and sentence.

In 2010, Monkemedi Chilume was convicted and sentenced by a Selebi-Phikwe magistrate to 10 years in jail for unlawfully having carnal knowledge of his niece who was 16 years old  in 2009.

The offence was committed at Chilume's sister's house, where he had been accommodated over night. He knew the girl to be mentally retarded.
