Councillors call for salary increase

Councillor Thuso Ogotseng who tabled the motion explained that civic leaders are currently not covered by an advanced salary scheme and they have nowhere to go when they have pressing challenges like illnesses or funerals. He indicated that the scheme used by public servants does not include the councillors and they need something that they can have put in place.

When debating the motion, Selemela ward councillor Binkie Kerileng indicated that if the issue was not looked into as a matter of urgency, then the "councillors would not be as honourable as they are supposed to be because they would be forced to borrow money in places where they are not supposed to go" which would therefore bring their profession into disrepute.
