Councillor angry over postponed projects

GABANE: The Botswana Congress Partys (BCP) councillor for Gabane North East, Ofentse Mareme, has criticised the government for deferring the villages storm water drainage system and internal road construction projects in 2009.

With a population of 20,000 people, Gabane is within the Greater Gaborone planning area. Its people argue that although it is situated only 17kms west of Gaborone, it is the least developed village in the capital city’s conurbation.

Speaking at a recent Kgotla meeting, Councillor Mareme characterised the postponement of the projects as a monumental blunder because costs would have skyrocketed by the time they would be implemented due to rising inflation. “The 21kms long internal roads and storm water drainage system would have cost P130 million,” he said. “However, given rising inflation and this talk of a recession, the costs would be higher than that.”
