Council trains destitute on survival skills

SELEBI-PHIKWE: A four-day training workshop on entrepreneurship and rehabilitation skills started yesterday in Selebi-Phikwe under the aegis of the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development of the town council.

The workshop is meant to impart information on entrepreneurship skills to new rehabilitation beneficiaries. It aims to raise awareness on the importance of rehabilitation of the destitute and to give them information on tendering procedures. Deputy Town Clerk (Technical) Mompati Seleka said the workshop will teach participants how to improve their lives and create employment. "The council would like to see destitute persons changing their lives and stop depending on government handouts. It is important for a person to have dignity and that is only possible if they have income. Even President Ian Khama spoke about dignity in his roadmap for this country and that is what we are willing to achieve," Seleka said.

A social welfare officer, Moeng Lesetedi said some people refuse to be removed from the destitute programme when their time is up. "We encourage people to undertake projects that can generate money for them. The council has projects of laundry, garden, flower making and upholstery. We expect people to be engaged in these projects and make money for themselves. We cannot force anyone to do anything they do not want.  We want you to leave this workshop equipped with skills that will benefit you," he said.
