Council overspends by P6.6million

SELEBI-PHIKWE: While Selebi-Phikwe Town Council (SPTC) was allocated P93 million for the 2012-2013 financial year, it spent close to P100 million by the end of the year representing P6.6 million over expenditure.Mayor Tebogo Matlhogonolo said this during a full council meeting on Wednesday.

He added that council was expected to generate P16 million from its own revenue sources like rates and service levies, but only P11 million was collected. He noted that property owners still owe a total of P5 million for the rates and service levy.  The mayor added that the serious economic decline has led to challenges in provision of public goods and services because the national budget became more constrictive.

"This means that council has to rely on alternative sources of funding to continue to provide services," he added. The mayor said that failure to pay rates and service levies compromises the council's ability to provide essential services such as refuse collection, maintenance of infrastructure and roads.  He implored those with outstanding dues to settle their debts so that council's capacity to provide services improves.
