Corruption rife in police force

FRANCISTOWN: The Commissioner of Police, Thebeyame Tsimako, has revealed that accepting bribes and theft top the list of crimes perpetrated by his officers.

Speaking at a consultative meeting last week in Francistown held under the auspices of the Ministry of Defence, Justice and Security, he warned offending officers that they will be brought to book. He said that his office intends to set an example to other officers who might be tempted to do crime."Any acts of crime and corruption by members of the police should be highly discouraged as they taint the good image of the police service," he said. He also urged members of the public to desist from offering bribes to police officers. "At times these bribes are instigated by members of the public," he said.

Recently a police constable was hauled before a Francistown Magistrate Court for allegedly receiving a P100 bribe from a Zimbabwean taxi man. Also in the same court, two police officers were arraigned on a charge of stealing 10 drums of diesel worth P18,000. Some top officers have also been accused of taking bribes from the public. Courts around the country are inundated with cases of corruption and theft allegedly committed by men and women of the law.  On a positive note, Tsimako applauded special constables and cluster committees for their good work ethic. He said it is a pity that the current economic situation does not allow for special constables and cluster committees to be rewarded accordingly. He further revealed that plans to build decent police stations for Tatitown and Francistown central have been dashed by the recession.
