Corrupt licenses under investigation

Investigations into corrupt issues of drivers licenses and public service vehicle (PSV) permits at the Department of Road Transport and Safety (DRTS) are expected to be complete next week Tuesday.

The law will take its course against people driving with false licences.
Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Works and Transport, Tutu Tsiang has confirmed that the investigations were expanded to other offices in the country following indications from the Gaborone head office that the problem is countrywide.
Tsiang further confirmed that some officers at DRTS are on interdiction pending conclusion of their cases.
She said that where there is evidence that some officers have been corrupt or some licence and permit holders have benefited from committing crime, the law will deal with them.
At the moment the ministry is developing processes that will close any loopholes in the system and the automation of all major functions of the department.  Together with DCEC, the Ministry is conducting anti-corruption workshops for the department, she said.
Minister of Works and Transport, Lesego Motsumi told Parliament last year that her ministry passes corruption allegations to DCEC and Police for a thorough and more professional investigation to establish whether such allegations are true.
While investigations are still continuing, there are indications that some passenger transport permits were issued corruptly and those involved will face legal action, Motsumi told Parliament last year.
Earlier on, the Botswana Bus Operators Association (BBOA) wrote a letter to President Festus Mogae complaining that some bus operators were favoured in issuing road permits.
They complained that many slots for local and international routes have been issued to some bus companies and rules were flouted in the process.
