SELEBI-PHIKWE: Selebi-Phikwe Town Council (SPTC) has been forced to suspend the much-anticipated construction of the bus rank due to the tough economic situation in the country caused by the world financial crisis.

The crisis has forced government to suspend some major projects. Speaking during a full council meeting last week, Selebi-Phikwe mayor Lekang Mukokomani said the suspension of the bus rank construction comes at a time when the council had already hired a consultant to supervise the project. Other projects that will not be taking off in Selebi-Phikwe due to resource constraints are construction of destitute housing, Kgotla office in Botshabelo, health staff houses and the primary education facilities backlog eradication programme.

"We all have, in one way or the other, been affected by the economic recession. It is therefore, incumbent upon all of us to collectively exercise some constraint in resource utilisation if we want to see the economic recovery from the current situation," said the mayor.
