Constable gets 10 yrs for armed robbery

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Selebi-Phikwe Magistrate Court yesterday sentenced a 25-year-old Botswana Police officer Moemedi Jonas to 10 years' imprisonment for armed robbery.

The court heard that Jonas and a colleague, who was recently acquitted, in March 2005 robbed Security specialists of P479, 165. 30, being the property of Score Supermarket, at gunpoint along the Serule-Phikwe road. Constable Jonas was then based in Francistown.  Passing judgement, principal magistrate Masilo Mathaka said the sentence would run from the day Jonas was incarcerated. He said a 10-year prison term was the minimum penalty that the accused could get and stated that he had taken into consideration the fact that Jonas was still young and had the opportunity to reform.

The magistrate noted that the money boxes would be returned to the security company while the bag and the gun would be surrendered to the state as evidence.
