Condoms go up in smoke

Condoms worth millions went up in smoke in the Saturday fire that gutted the main warehouse of Population Services International (PSI) Botswana. PSI human resources manager, Jabulani Dick said they lost their entire stock of 14 million condoms costing P5.5 million.

He said the estimated cost of damages caused by the fire that gutted five other offices in the building that housed their warehouse is P10 million. He said there was a new consignment of six million condoms from India that were still to undergo testing. Dick said that they had insured their stock and assets but that unfortunately the new stock had still not been insured. He said they have had a meeting with the Ministry of Health about the condoms and in the meantime, stock would be brought from other warehouses to Gaborone. PSI has warehouses in Francistown, Maun and Palapye. Dick said that the supplies should be adequate for the next two months.

PSI Botswana has been working in partnership with the Ministry of Health to motivate people to adopt healthy behaviour using evidence based social marketing techniques. PSI activities have been an integral part of the government's national AIDS prevention strategy.
