Compromise needed in race for Phikwe mayor

SELEBI-PHIKWE: The race for the mayor of Selebi-Phikwe and the deputy is headed for a deadlock unless the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) and the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) strike a compromise.

The two parties shared the 14 council seats in the town equally in the recent general elections and this means that voting for the mayor on party lines as usually the norm will produce a tie. The election of the mayor is scheduled for November 5. Most of those who were in the last council lost in the elections and chances of a first-timer taking over as mayor are very high.

A BDP councillor Lekang Mukokomani has said that this time round, it is difficult to say who among them is likely to be the mayor because his party and the BCP will have to caucus and decide on a name. "We are currently waiting for nominations of councillors to take place as they will determine which party will have the majority of councilors."
