MMADINARE: The closure of Mmadinare Abattoir more than six months ago by the department of veterinary services has brought nothing but doom to the villagers.

The decision was taken after the facility failed to meet the requirements of the Livestock and Meat Industries Act of 2007.Cattle owners in the village now have to travel close to 20 kilometers to slaughter their animals in Selebi-Phikwe. Recently, a cattle owner, Gobamang Kofa told the Assistant Minister of Local Government, Botlogile Tshireletso that they are forced to wake up at 4am in order to make the quota permitted at the abattoir. He said that the Selebi-Phikwe abattoir only slaughters 40 beasts a day, which is a small number compared to the demand.

Kofa said that many butcheries in the village have closed because they are unable to stock beef and workers have lost their jobs.
