SELEBI-PHIKWE: Ikageleng Phase Two-Location councillor and former Selebi-Phikwe town mayor, Lekang Mukokomani, expects job creation to be at the top of President Ian Khama's state of the nation address on Monday.

Mukokomani told Mmegi that job creation has been part of presidential addresses in neighbouring countries. He said that he expects Khama to outline his plan on job creation for Batswana. He observed that the government is currently encouraging people to be self-employed. But to him, this is a non-starter. He said the government must create jobs for its citizens.

Mukokomani argued that poverty alleviation programmes such as backyard gardening have always been a way of life for Batswana."Batswana have been doing backyard gardening and the government is just encouraging them to continue with it. These government initiatives cannot diversify the economy.
